Diets and exercise lead us to looking and feeling young, attractive, and thin. That is what the magazines say. Isn’t that what it is all about? I used to buy health magazines years ago. I stayed current on all the fad diets and exercise programs, because that is what I do for a living-that is, I taught people to feel young, attractive, and thin. But, that has all changed. That is not what I do anymore. Now, I teach people what I have learned from many very smart and very healthy 100 year old people (Centarians-is the proper term). The goal of young, attractive, and thin will take you forty, or maybe fifty years of life, maybe? The goal of fitness, from the perspective of a deeper spiritual awareness, can last 100 years.

  You remember the old saying 'it takes a village, to raise a child'? I would also add, For a lifetime of purpose, it takes a village.       To sustain health, one needs to include the needs of their community in order to see a much broader picture than simply caring for the self. Our new motivation for sustaining healthy habits is to care for the self, to better care for others!       It is members of a village that loves a child beyond adulthood and into senior adulthood. A loving village sustains its members throughout his entire life. And the incentive for him is to return love to others. We can stay well so we can better care for the rest of the village.       A healthy village supports, encourages, feeds, cries and prays with each of its members. Through this inter-dependent living, the three basic variables for an individual’s excellent health are met. These variables: food, exercise, and…love. Love is the catalyst for producing very long and meaningful lives for each member of the village.   My friends, stay well!   (This is me with five of my good friends at The Village. Each one is 100 or older...and healthy) Today, we see exercise through a dark lens. During the time we were veering away from the foods that have been provided for us through nature, we have also been unconsciously losing our perspective on the value and meaning of exercise, of movement. There was a time, where being ‘fit’, quite literally meant being a better provider for loved ones. Farming was a very physical lifestyle, and the majority of people were responsible for raising their own provisions. Exercise was never thought of, but yet everyone did it out of necessity. The stronger you were and the better your endurance, the more you could do to provide for yourself and for others. Plowing, seeding, and harvesting were all very physical jobs.  Today, exercise is thought of more than ever, yet we are at the most sedentary point in history. Very few people get the benefits of a physical lifestyle. We have spent more in recent years on medications, corrective surgeries and adaptive equipment for chronic conditions that are largely avoidable (95%), or at least partially corrective, through the benefits of exercise. Some of these conditions include arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and even depression. Without question, exercise has a role in impeding the development of almost all early disability or life threatening ailments. And, the single most important step we can take as a nation to secure our national healthcare programs is to start eating healthier and exercising faithfully today. To all the new readers, Stay Well!
